045. What is this? Oh no, you’ve got to be kidding! I consider my options while slowly walking towards the Arabian Sea. I can continue to slowly saunter towards the beach. I can scale a fence and cut through private property. I can turn around and find another path. I can yell obscenities. Or I can smack an ass. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
“Well, this is India. Cows graze, eat, and shit everywhere!”
“They can’t eat trash. It’d kill them,” argues my brother.
“No, they do eat trash. I’ve seen them rummaging through piles of trash munching on organic and inorganic matter. Stray dogs right next to them. You want to bet?” I taunt.
My brother looks at me.
“I don’t bet* with you,” he says.
“Whatever. Hey, look at that,” I point.
“The cows don’t do this in Africa,” he says.
* Probably because he still owes me 500 rupees from a bet made and lost few days prior

So, they eat the trash. But at least they don't have to go knocking over trash CANS like they do here. They just have to graze on the side of the road, no?
My immediate inclination was to say
"Wow, I wish I could just graze, eat, and shit wherever"
It sounded much more in my head than it did when it came out.
I adore the dog, too. Does he Moo like the cows? THAT would be impressive.
I would LOVe to someday say, "The cows don't do that in Africa." and KNOW because I'd been there before. You two are very lucky to be so well travelled!
Indian Cows must be the biggest bullies of the pasture.
Once you're deified, there's no going back to the barn.
Mooooooo COWS!!!! I’m such a sucker. They had stray dogs in CR, but definitely no stray cows!
or you could have hopped on the back of one and gotten to the Sea a little bit faster!
k8 – whoa… you’ve got grab a phot of that!
Lilu – And the stray dogs in India are… ahem, peaceful
Katie – that would make for an interesting blog post
twinkie – the cows wouldn’t notice the difference
charlotte – ha! now that would be a pic
t2ed – which explains why they are always in the road… they need a dedicated cow (and other animal) lane
Oh man I feel you! All the holy cows. But after a while you get used to it. And I'm sure you will miss them when in another country or back home.
I like especially the water buffaloes here in Goa and of course, the small baby coats in all colors. Hehe! Makes me smile all the time.
