I have a confession to make. I like to jog to classical music at ear shattering decibel counts. Not necessarily all the time, but more often than an aural anomaly would statistically permit.
Typically I run to music you’d hear at a trendy club in Ibiza or music you might hear from a passing Cadillac tattooed with gaudy metallic spinners. But when I’m not doing speed work or tempo runs, I rock the classical music. I rock Mendlessohn and Bach. I rock the Baroque, Modern, and Romantic periods. I rock whatever the hell is playing on 90.9 FM. And people turn heads.
Saturday though, because tropical storm Hannah was passing through the area, I jogged in the rain. As many of you know, the rain on Saturday wasn’t just any kind rain. It was the dramatic, multi directional, flash flood inducing, property damaging kind of rain, and as a result, there weren’t too many people jogging. In fact, there were only two people jogging. But I’ll be the first to tell you this was a primal, irreverently youthful, sloshingly brilliant, very memorable jog.
The combination of classical music and tropical storm rains crystallized this jog in the vaults of my memory. The ominous cloud coverage paired well with the brooding chords. Those schizophrenic cloud droppings danced well with the bewildering counterpoint harmony being dropped by the string section. The dramatic changes in wind direction mimicked the ebb and flow of the music. Approaching unavoidable puddles of water was like following a chord progression by the horn section. Stepping in those puddles and learning they’re deeper than thought was like hearing that horn section purposefully hit a dissonant note. In short, the music pierced my soul as droplets of rain punched into my skin. It is that simple.
So the next time a tropical storm passes through your area, forget about the emergency supply kit and go jog a few miles while listening to some classical music. Consider it an affordable, soul rejuvenating alternative to acupuncture…

I really like to job to earthquakes. It makes me feel like I can go faster than I really can. And in every direction.
Jogging to classical music, huh? I must admit I’ve never tried that. I’m more of a screaming/angry-type music gal…it helps propel me forward!
t2ed – I think that is a Nike commercial waiting to be developed.
Zandria – Let it out Zandria… just let the anger race out…
But I do need some hardcore heavy metal musical crack when I’m doing speedwork… Bach & Vivaldi just don’t do the trick
I rock to classical all the time. Ha! So glad there’s others out there willing to admit it….
k8 – be proud. be loud. rock that classical music!
