Why Aren’t Libraries Buying, Collecting, And Curating Hyperlocal Materials?

In the very near future, it’s conceivable that the best place to view a curated collection of DC’s local history and culture won’t be from within any library supported by or funded by the DC/Federal government, but from a collection curated by some meticulous tech-savvy geek obsessed with a specific neighborhood in DC. This person could live in Reykjavik, Mumbai, or Tokyo. Possibly. However, I’d put my money on a DC resident.

I only bring this up because I’m wondering why neighborhood libraries aren’t actively acquiring loads of local data, creating a platform from which patrons can identify, use, remix, and incorporate digitally born information with more “traditional” resources?
